Bill Baxter was first elected to the Parliament of Victoria in
1973 and served until 1976 as Member for Murray Valley in the Legislative
Assembly. In 1978 he was elected to the Legislative Council as Member
for North Eastern Province. He became Deputy Leader of the Legislative
Council in 1979 and was Leader in the Upper House from 1988 until October
1999.
He comes from a farming background with experience in dry land and irrigated
production of wool, meat and grains. He has held executive positions
on numerous community organisations and was twice President of the Shire
of Nathalia. Bill Baxter has served on six Parliamentary Committees and
travelled extensively as Australasian Regional Representative on the
Executive of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association between 1980
and 1983.
Following the 1992 election victory by the Liberal/National Coalition
he was appointed Minister for Roads and Ports. During the Government's
second term he chaired the Parliament House Completion Authority from
1996 to 1997.
He is The Nationals spokesman for Finance, Industry
and Industrial Relations, and Financial Services Industry.
He is also the Shadow Treasurer.
