Beware of scams

Monday, 8 February 2010

The Nationals Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty said today he had received a number of complaints from constituents regarding telemarketers and con artists.

“This is a timely reminder for people to beware of telemarketing phone calls and door to door sales pitches,” Mr Delahunty said.

“In light a recent newspaper article about door to door insulation installers, residents need to be wary and ask for identification. If in doubt, say no.

“As the old saying goes “if it sounds too good to be true it often is.”

Mr Delahunty is also reminding people of the Lowan electorate to also re-register for the Do Not Call registry.

“By registering your telephone number on the Do Not Call register you will eliminate many of those unwanted telemarketing calls that always seem to arrive as you just sit down to dinner.

“I ask people to be wary when dealing with sales people either by telephone or door to door and it is unfortunately the most vulnerable in our community who are often targeted by unscrupulous traders,” Mr Delahunty said.

Mr Delahunty said it was easy to register your number either by telephone 1300 792 958 or by sending an application to Do Not Call Register, PO Box 42, North Melbourne VIC 3051 or visit the website www.donotcall.gov.au to register online.
